The second most sought-after pets in the U.S. behind dogs aren’t cats, according to a new report. The animal doesn’t even have fur. After crunching data from Google’s keyword planner, the website All About Cats determined that axolotls are the No. 2 pet people consider buying. It’s not surprising that animal-loving web users are searching for dogs. Between July 2020 and July 2021, over two and half million people in the U.S. made queries related to owning a canine companion. If aspiring pet owners aren’t fantasizing about having a dog, they’re likely leaning in a much different direction. The axolotl came in second place with more than 700,000 searches. The amphibian beat ferrets, rabbits, and parrots, in addition to cats.
Axolotls are a type of salamander native to the lakes and canals of Xochimilco, Mexico. In captivity, the creatures are often white with pink, feathery gills branching out of their heads. Though they’re illegal to own in some states—including California, Maine, New Jersey, and Virginia—they can be kept as pets elsewhere. Just make sure to get a 15- to 20-gallon fish tank with a secure lid before bringing one home.
The axolotl isn’t the only exotic pet on the list. Americans are also searching for bearded dragons, turtles, and snakes—though how many people actually follow through on their research into owning these pets remains to be seen.
If you’re looking for a more conventional animal to add to your family, consider narrowing your search to the No.1 pet on the list. After reading this list of the most in-demand pets, check out the most popular dog breeds in America in 2020.
